My Skin Battle - Making Progress
My skin battle started about 9 months ago after I came off the contraceptive injection (Reasons why is a whole other story).
At its worst my skin was erupting in really sore cystic spots around my mouth, jaw line and sides of my face - classic areas for hormonal skin problems. For a while I wasn't doing myself any favors...yes I'm a picker and a squeezer (I know!) but I was also really sporadic with my skin care routine. Cleansing at night but not in the morning, not taking makeup off before bed everything you shouldn't do I was!!
It was when by boyfriend started commenting on how bad my skin was that I had to do something. So I have been religiously keeping to my skin care routine over the last month and thought I'd share with you what I think are the two steps that have made the most difference to my skin, both in terms of calming down existing breakouts and preventing new ones.
Double toning and the morning cleanse!
Morning and evening I have been thoroughly cleansing my skin mainly with the Una Brennan Super Facialist Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil (phew that's a gob full!) but I do use others (Perhaps a post on my faves soon?). This cleanser thoroughly breaks down all my makeup and is a pleasure to use. I massage it all over my face and remove with a Primark 3 for £2.50 flannel, morning and night.
It contains a wealth of yummy plant and fruit oils including; Sunflower, Olive, Grape, Raspberry and Sweet Orange to name a few. I guess this is where the Vitamin C+ comes from? What ever they do it removes makeup amazingly and my skin always feels nourished and by no means greasy after use. Huge thumbs up to this one!
Following this I use two toners an acid based one in the form of Pixi Glow Tonic followed by a spritz of La Roche Posay Serozinc toner (my fave step! But unfortunately not available in the UK, I got mine off Ebay).
Glycolic acid is the main active ingredient in the Pixi Glow Tonic and in this product it acts as a gentle exfoliator. It gently and safely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells that sit on the surface of our skin, allowing fresh new skin to shine through. It can also help lighten discoloration of the skin, such as sun spots or age spots and help those with acne-prone and blackhead prone skin.
Serozinc contains all of THREE ingredients: Water, Sodium Chloride and Zinc Sulfate.
Sodium Chloride is more commonly known as Salt but only appears in this product in small quantities. Salt is antiseptic and I think this is one of the key reasons this product has worked for me. I find that this toner really does help prevent breakouts reoccurring and has helped keep those pesky under skin, sore as hell spots erupting. Salt is also excellent at balancing the pH of your skin and after using a acidic toner to exfoliate this little beauty helps restore a balanced pH level.
I have been really pleased with the results I have had using these products in my new routine. Let me know what you think are the best products from your routine I would love some recommendations.
